Long lasting sails for Community Sailing

optimist sailing community sailing

Community sailing organizations offer sailing opportunities and instruction for all, ranging from recreational to adaptive sailing and racing. This is not about winning at all cost with short lifespan sails made with the most exotic cloth possible… we understand this and we strive to provide fun sails that are affordable, easy to use and offer long-lasting performance.
For many sailmakers, there may be glory in winning another world championship. For us there is deep satisfaction in serving organizations that further the sport of sailing with enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
Are you a sailing base manager, a community sailing program director, a dock master? Call us to discuss your needs!

Sail durability

We select materials that will last many seasons, and will endure the rigors of collective use — the cloth we use is often heavier than that used for race sails, or privately owned recreational sails. Consult us, and we will guide you to the best material choice for your situation.

The cuts are slightly modified towards durability as well: negative roach on jibs, minimizing the number of battens when desirable, eliminating high wear and tear points, stronger reinforcements are all elements of our design philosophy for community sails.

Sail affordability

Affordability is a prime concern — but we do not exclusively focus on producing the absolute cheapest possible sails. Price is essential, but we try to strike the right balance between price and best material for the use of the sail. A heavier Dacron costs a little more, but may lengthen the life of the sail by a season or two. Radial reinforcements allow the sails to hold their shapes longer…

Ease of use

Have you ever seen a sailing instructor struggle to set up a dozen boats in breeze, before the kids come in ? We feel for him – or her… From furling jibs (with UV protection band) for the Mercator or J boats, to lazy cradles, to Vectran C420 luff wires and tie-less opti sails,  we offer many options on our sails to make set-up, use, and storage easier on the sailors and the coaches.

Have you ever thought of color coding your sails, to visually identify groups of students on the water, organize drills or set up team racing? We have! Call us to discuss color options.

And if you have a great idea you want to implement on our sails, we will do it—and we might even ask for permission to use it on an other client’s sails. An example? Ken Block, of Park City Sailing Association, suggested we shorten the leech of their J22 sails, so that the booms ride higher and create less “booms”: everybody loves them…

Fun and performance

A fast, responsive sail is a fun sail. Our designs are derived from championship winning sails, and adapted to community use: they will give your users seasons of fun and performance. To make them more fun and attractive, as well as communicate your brand to the public, ask us to make sails to your colors, or with your logo….
